Hi folks, Shopify is currently suffering a network outage at our hosting provider. The downtime began at 3:34PM EST and we do not yet have a estimate for when service will be returned.

Coming on the heels of the recent DNS outage, this is an extremely unfortunate event, and one that everyone here at JadedPixel is taking very seriously.

I will be posting updates in this space as we get them.

Update: we’re now at over 3 hours of downtime, and our network provider has not responded to our requests for an update.

Scott Thanks for the update. Glad this blog is hosted from another provider. :) Scott
Dan I would suggest putting the forum on a different server as well. That way, it will still be up in the event that this type of situation happens again. I don't think most people visit this blog as they do the message board. Thanks for the update.
Kent Knowing nothing about your hosting setup I wondered, have you considered Amazon EC2 w/ S3 for storage? I do believe that would host you guys quite easily. Perhaps it is a more stable platform at a variable cost as you grow? The guys over at smugmug.com sure have a lot of nice things to say about it.

Hi Kent, Yes, we are in fact considering Amazon EC2 as a possible option. This latest downtime is definitely the last straw as far as our current provider is concerned.
Mel Pennington hey, maybe just buy one of those black boxes from Sun. lol.
Zeke Oh dear. Worst possible day for us. We were planning to implement a custom theme and launch the site today. *sigh*
Kelly Yeah, this is not a good fit for us because we lost a lot of orders today and this is a very busy season for us. Combine that with the % the store takes and it's not profitable with over $2000 lost in a day and what it does to our reputation with the manufacturer. We also pay for advertising that goes nowhere and that sort of blows.
JQ Something happened because at least now it resolves to what kind of looks like my shop without the graphics. :)
Kenzie This is the first major outage I've noticed, and I've been around a while. Normally the service is rock solid, but I guess that's why a short outage gets so much notice.
Alex Hillman I just wanted to comment on how rockstar the staff at shopify is. I sent them a quick email to ask about the expected downtime, knowing full well that they were most likely aware of the problem and dealing with it. Paul took the time out of yelling things like this, and responded to me to let me know that things were being worked on. Thats the kind of customer service that I wish I could get everywhere. Not only do these guys have an insanely useful product at the right price, but they support it VERY well. Kudos, Paul and the rest of the shopify team.
Karla Could you share who your web host is? In cases like this, that's why it does pay to go with a web host that has a backup and recovery strategy which I know rackspace.com does but not everyone can afford.
